TENTATIVE PROGRAMME*
of the Baltic Floating University XIV Training-Through-Research Cruise
Research vessel ‘Prof. Shtockman’
Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea
July 2007

The expedition is planned for July 10 – July 28, 2007 on board the Research vessel ‘Prof. Shtockman’. Fieldwork will be carried out within the international IOC-UNESCO program ‘Floating Universities’.

Objectives
The main scientific aim of the expedition is the research of hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological processes and their variability in the Proper and coastal parts of the Baltic Sea; geoecological monitoring in the Gulf of Finland and on the Kaliningrad shelf; assessment of ecological state of the Baltic Sea waters; research of dumped chemical munitions influence on state of the marine environment.
Education and training will be provided in oceanography and marine ecology, covering data collection, data analysis and interpretation. The expedition team will include research staff, instructors and students from Universities of Russia and European States. Lectures will be given on different oceanographic subjects. The cruise will create a unique opportunity for exchange of ideas and approaches between the young researchers of different nations.

Activities
Research of hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological factors influence on the state of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland ecosystem will include:
§ collection and analysis of data on hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological characteristics in the areas under research;
§ study of spatial-time variability of hydrophysical characteristics on oceanographic sites and at the HELCOM stations;
§ study of water masses distribution, conditions of vertical stratification formation;
§ study of spatial-time variability of hydrochemical characteristics and pollutants on oceanographic sites and at the HELCOM stations;
§ study of pollution with oil hydrocarbons and heavy metals in the near-bottom waters (only sampling on the vessel. The subsequent analysis of the samples in the laboratory of St.-Petersburg will be done);
§ study of quantitative composition and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton (only sampling with the subsequent analysis in the laboratory of St.-Petersburg) and zoobenthos; chlorophyll “a” distribution;
§ estimation of primary production in the different parts of the Baltic Sea;
§ estimation of bottom sediments and near-bottom waters pollution in the main sedimentation basins in the eastern Gulf of Finland, in Gotland, Arkon and Bornholm Deeps and Kaliningrad shelf;
§ estimation of poisonous substances outflow and intensity of corrosion processes through determination of arsenic content and total content of metals in bottom sediments and near-bottom layers of water on dumping sites of chemical munitions in the Bornholm Deep.
§ the primary processing of the collected data
Training and education in the fields of marine and coastal sciences and in data collection and analyses imply:
§ training and education of students from Universities of Russia and European States implementing the ‘training through research’ principle;
§ lectures and seminars on specific issues with the use of video and DVD materials;
§ training students in acquiring research skills at sea and in data preprocessing;
§ presentation by the students from European Universities of their scientific projects;
§ Mid-Cruise Seminar in Stockholm (Sweden). The program of the seminar includes the student presentations, lectures of the scientists from relevant environmental organisations and Universities of Sweden.

All collected data will be available for student needs.
